Background

In 1999, when Alasdair was 12 years old, we had a long walk in the Auvergne. This was a formative experience for both of us. Now he is back after 8 months in Central America and is shortly to go to Emmanuel College, Cambridge. In 1999 he was starting secondary school; 7 years later it seemed a good idea to celebrate another milestone in his life by having another walk.

Day 1 - Sunday 10th September 2006

We set off from St Ives at about 10:30 on a fine dry day. It was a bit misty but after an hour or so the sun started to show through.

It has been very pleasant walking but there is an awful lot of up and down, some of it very steep and with high steps which I do not like much. Alasdair has sailed through it.

The tide was out as we left St Ives

Looking back at St Ives. There were lots of people about.

View from the cliff top. We are on the country rock, much metamorphosed by the Lands End granite.

The terrain gets quite rugged.

There has been a lot of people all along the route, especially near St Ives but even further along we were never out of sight of other people. But tomorrow we will be further from civilisation and it will be a Monday.

We got to Boswednack Manor at 4 and found a note on the door saying they were out and that we should go in and that our room number was 2. So we can see that security has been tightened up even here.

The scenery en-route has been rather nice - lots of cliffs and coves and occasional sandy beaches. How you get to them without a boat or climbing gear beats me however. One beach was in 2 halves; one had a family playing all the usual beach games and the other had a couple of elderly nudists. But how either party got down must have been very difficult.

Alasdair and I chatted about all sorts of things - about what he did in Central America, who he met etc. while I was talking about what we had done and books read --- General chit chat which will cover pretty near everything in the next few days.

Alasdair has had his bath; I am about to have mine. Then a rest and off to the nearby hotel for a meal and beer, then back here, cards and bed.
